बचपन में हमने पापा को संघर्ष करते देखा, हालाँकि उन्होंने हमें कभी दिखने नहीं दिया। स्कूल की नौकरी, घर की ज़िम्मेदारियाँ, और हमारी हर छोटी-बड़ी ज़रूरत — सब कुछ चुपचाप, बिना किसी शिकायत के।
आज हम जो कुछ भी हैं, उसकी नींव उन्हीं की मेहनत है।
उनके रिटायरमेंट का दिन नज़दीक आया तो हम सोचने लगे — जो इंसान पूरी ज़िंदगी दूसरों के बच्चों को पढ़ाता रहा, उसे क्या भेंट करें? फिर लगा, इससे बड़ा तोहफ़ा क्या होगा कि उसकी अपनी कहानी एक किताब बन जाए।
सालों की बातचीत में जो कहानियाँ हमने सुनी थीं, उन्हें हमने लिख लिया। यह किताब उनके रिटायरमेंट समारोह के दिन उन्हें भेंट की गई — धन्यवाद कहने का हमारा तरीक़ा।

As children we watched our father struggle, though he rarely let us see it. The school job, the weight of the household, and every need of ours, big or small — he carried it all quietly, without complaint.
Whatever we have become, the foundation is his labour.
As his retirement day drew near, we kept asking ourselves: what do you give a man who spent his whole life teaching other people's children? Then it came to us — what greater gift than his own story, bound as a book?
